Query domain registration details, registrar, and expiry date
• Domain: enter a bare domain without https:// (e.g. example.com)
• Shows registrar, registration date, expiry date, and NS records
• WHOIS data for some TLDs may be limited
WHOIS lookup queries the authoritative registration database for a domain and returns the registrar name, creation date, expiry date, and name servers. This data comes from the global registry chain — TLD registry records for the domain itself, then registrar records for detailed contact fields.
Common uses include checking when a domain was registered and when it expires, identifying the registrar to initiate a transfer, verifying that name servers are configured correctly, and confirming that a recently registered domain has propagated to the registry.
Since GDPR and similar regulations, most registrars redact personal contact details by default or proxy them through a privacy service. Registrar name, creation date, expiry date, and name servers are usually still available.
If a WHOIS query returns 'no match' or 'not found' for the domain, it is likely unregistered. For bulk availability checking, use the Domain Combo tool.
Registry databases update quickly — usually within minutes to a few hours after registration or a transfer. Propagation to downstream WHOIS servers can take up to 24 hours.
The registry operates the TLD (e.g. Verisign for .com) and holds authoritative records. The registrar is the company where the domain owner registered the domain. WHOIS data comes from both layers.
